1908 Pattern Cavalry Sword By The Wilkinson Sword Company Swords

~ 1908 Pattern Cavalry Sword By The Wilkinson Sword Company ~

Here we have one of the most well known swords Britain ever produced as it was the last sword to see general use in British hands before swords were made obsolete for all intents and purposes.

This is a well marked sword made by one of the most famous and prolific sword makers in Britain, The Wilkinson Sword Company.

This pattern of sword is noted for its knurled pistol grip and its very large cup guard. The blade was a thrust centric one with some capacity to cut. The sword has a steel scabbard with two fixed suspension rings.

The markings on the sword are:

‘P’08’ is the pattern designation marks for the 1908 cavalry sword.

A crowned ‘X6E’ and an ‘X’ that appears on both sides of the blade and the guard is the inspectors marks for quality and flexibility.

Unfortunately the marks on the guard are very faint and can’t be seen in a photo.

The broad arrow is the acceptance mark of the war office.

The ‘Wilkinson’ and ‘WSC’ marks show the sword was made by the Wilkinson Sword Company.

The ’6 ‘12’ is the swords manufacturing date.

The scabbard is also a Wilkinson piece but appears to have been made in 1914.

    ~ Dimensions ~

    The weight is 2.1 Kg.

The blade is 35 inches (89 cm) long.

The sword is 43 inches (109 cm) long.

The sword in its scabbard is 44.5 inches (113 cm).

The guard is 8 inches (20.5 cm) from top to pommel.

The guard is 7 inches (18 cm) from back to the front of the cup

    ~ Condition ~

The sword is in good overall condition with some wear and aging as would be expected.

The blade still has its polished finish with some spots of rust on the ricasso and some blackening further up the blade.

The wooden grip is in very good condition with a nice aged finish.

The exposed steel of the cup guard and the scabbard have some surface rust and pitting but nothing more than would be expected with an item of this age. Some of the darkening may have been due to treatment or colouring of the steel as it wasn’t uncommon to have treated rather than polished swords.

    ~ Postage ~

Postage to the UK will be £18 or you could pick it up from our Portsmouth shop....Read full description
