    ~ A 19th Century Arabic Doglock Jezail Musket .56 cal ~

The Jezail (sometimes Jezzail from the Pashto language) was a simple, cost-efficient and often handmade muzzle-loading long arm commonly used in British India, Central Asia and parts of the Middle East in the past.

The firing mechanism is has a sliding pan and a doglock hammer.

The lower side of the stock where the action is situated is reinforced with a steel plate, fixed by three screws to the wood.

The musket is long barrelled with a full stock and engraved brass bands.

The stock is decorated with stained ivory.

The steel barrel is half hexagonal and the ramrod is present.

The musket is fitted with both front and rear sights.

    ~ Dimensions ~

The barrel length is 50 inches (127 cm) and the overall length of the musket is 64 inches (163 cm).

    ~ Condition ~

The musket is in fair condition for its age but parts of the firing mechanism are missing so it is just a wall hanger at the moment.

The woodwork has aged and the stock cracked in two, being held together by some later nailed metal reinforcement plates.

The hammer’s lock is missing along with some screws on the barrel’s metal tang (the part that is attached to the wooden stock).

    ~ Jezails Muskets ~

They were generally handmade weapons, and consequently they widely varied in their construction. Jezails were seen as very personal weapons, and unlike the typical military weapons of the time which were very plain and utilitarian, jezails tended to be well crafted and were usually intricately decorated.

    ~ Postage ~

UK postage is £25 or it can be collected from our shop in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard....Read full description
