~ 19th Century British Made Cutlass Pepperbox Percussion Revolver ~
This is a rare 58-bore pepperbox revolver by Smith of London.
Its octagonal rifled barrel stamped with the manufacturer’s mark on the top is fitted with a cutlass blade underneath. The blade is attached to with a welding on the end of the muzzle and two screws on the opposite side.
The blade is beautifully engraved ‘J Rogers Cuttler, Superlative Sheffield’.
The barrel is fitted with a front sight and is decorated towards the muzzle with floral engravings.
The same engraved pattern can be seen on the cylinder, trigger guard and frame.
The chequered wooden grips are attached to the main frame by a central screw.
The cylinder is stamped with a number of Birmingham proof marks.
The rifling has an unusual pattern as the rifling is interrupted towards the end of the muzzle for a section around 10mm long. It is clearly a machined feature.
