The katar or katara is a type of push dagger from the Indian subcontinent. The weapon’s were used for fighting and in Religious ceremonies. They are characterized by its H-shaped horizontal hand grip which results in the blade sitting above the user's knuckles. Unique to the Indian subcontinent, it is the most famous and characteristic of Indian daggers. Ceremonial katars were also used in worship. It has a heavy 6 ½” dagger fighting blade with medial ridge (12 ½” overall). One side of the blade features Ganesha, also spelled Ganesh, also called Ganapati, the elephant-headed Hindu god. The reverse features Mother Durga the Hindu Goddess or the supreme energy (Shakti) riding a Lion or Tiger which are embodiments of power which are controlled by the Goddess. The Lion or Tiger represent power, will and determination. Mother Durga riding the cat symbolises her mastery over all these qualities. The typical ‘H’ shaped grip has an ornate grip bar (all illustrated). As is common this Katar is without scabbard. The price includes UK delivery. ED 2561
