The Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment) was formed during the 1881 Childers Reforms of the British Army. The Sherwood Foresters saw action in Egypt in 1882 and in South Africa during the Boer Wars. This is a rare 3 rivet, 1st type, 1st Pattern, P1888 Lee Metford Bayonet with scabbard and frog as used by British troops during the Boer Wars. It has its original wooden grips with the rare 3 brass rivets and oil holes in the wood grips. The bayonet is in original as found uncleaned condition. Its 12" double edged blade with medial ridge has inspection marks at the ricasso together with 1894-97 dates and the pommel is stamped '116' together with 'DY' to the Nottingham & Derbyshire Regiment (Sherwood Foresters).It has its original black leather scabbard with steel locket and chape. The throat mount of the scabbard is crisply stamped 'MHW8.01' and '328'. The scabbard is fitted with original leather frog with 6 brass rivets, belt loop and strap with brass buckle.
