The range and quality of Johnson's products were first class, see page 215 of 'The Sheffield Knife Book by 'Geoffrey Tweedale'.The original partnership was apparently Christopher and Henry Johnson, which was listed in a directory (1837) as C. & H. Johnson, successor to Ward & Co, Howard Street (Broomhead & Ward). Christopher and Henry Johnson had also been listed in 1833 as merchant’s clerks. This Bowie knife is 30 cm in length. The blade is 15 ½ cm from tip to ricasso and 4 ½ cm wide. The hardwood grips have brass pins and are 12 ½ cm from the top to the brass finger guard. The tang is outlined with machined brass between the grips. The ripasso is engraved ‘Johnson Sheffield’ with ‘C.J’ within a flag and pole. The blade has staining on both sides, but does not detract from the knifes aesthetics. The knife comes with a thick leather sheath with brass studs and upper belt loop.
