A very fine pair of antique Ram's-horn Scottish Highlander's all metal percussion belt pistols retailed by MURDOCH. The metal stocks are both beautifully decorated overall showing a stand of arms to each pistol including a Scottish Tam-o-Shanter engraved on one side and union flag to the other. Both pistols are engraved to the rear with a family crest of a Griffen. Lock plates both engraved with the makers name MURDOCH. MURDOCH is known to have been active in Edinburgh circa 1820-1855. These are very rare Highland dress pistols that would have been supplied by him during that time. Round barrels finely engraved for approx 3 inches terminating in an octagonal shaped muzzle. Approx .50 calibre. Flat sided grips terminating in the traditional rams-horn shaped butts. Showing hardly any signs of use or wear. Each pistol is complete with its original correct steel ramrod, spring steel belt hook, ball trigger and original steel pricker screwed into each butt. Good condition and working order, still retaining some of the original blueing to the barrels and the belt hooks. This is the type of pistol that would have been carried by a wealthy Scottish Highlander for personal protection and at special occasions wearing the full Highland dress, during the mid 19th century. Actions both in good working condition. King George the IVth of England was painted wearing a similar pair of pistols when he visited the Royal Highland pageant in Edinburgh at the invitation of Sir Walter Scott in c.1822. A very scarce pair of authentic Scottish pistols in good untouched condition with all parts original. Length approx 10 inches. Ref 1863.
