    ~ A Pre-World War II Model of LZ129, Hindenburg Zeppelin Airship ~

This is a fine display Model of LZ129, the Hindenburg airship.

It was likely intended for US boardroom use due to all legends being in English.

The airship is constructed of pinned pine strips and built on a plinth.

Intended to be viewed from both sides, the silvered top half has the 3rd Reich insignia on the top fin.

The lower hull is of varnished natural wood, with hand-drawn depictions of the internal compartments and bracing, with annotations in English on both sides of the airship.

The port side plinth has the airships name, designation and date of launch in gold paint “German Dirigible LZ-129, ‘Hindenburg’ – 1936”, while starboard side shows ships technical data in imperial measurements “804.’L 135’ diam 7.062.100 cubic ft. 16 Gas cells. 4x1320 h.p. engines. 242 T.”.

    ~ LZ129 Hindenburg ~

LZ 129 Hindenburg was the most famous German airship due to its unfortunate fate. This zeppelin was a commercial passenger-carrying rigid airship, the lead ship of the Hindenburg class, the longest class of flying machine and the largest airship by envelope volume.

It was designed and built by the Zeppelin Company (Luftschiffbau Zeppelin GmbH) on the shores of Lake Constance in Friedrichshafen and was operated by the German Zeppelin Airline Company (Deutsche Zeppelin-Reederei). The airship flew from March 1936 until it was destroyed by fire 14 months later on May 6, 1937, at the end of the first North American transatlantic journey of its second season of service. Thirty-six people died in the accident, which occurred while landing at Lakehurst Naval Air Station in Manchester Township, New Jersey, United States.
Hindenburg was named after the late Field Marshal Paul von Hindenburg, President of Germany from 1925 until his death in 1934.

    ~ Dimensions ~

The length is 155 cm (61 inches) with a diameter of approx. 22 cm (8.7 inches).

The stand is 174 cm (68.5 inches) long by 43 cm (17 inches) wide. The height of the zeppelin on its stand is 45 cm (17.7 inches).

    ~ Condition ~

The airship model is in an overall good condition but requires light restoration.

There is some damage to the starboard aileron, the engine cars are missing and the varnishing has left some drips.

    ~ Postage ~

It can be collected from our shop in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard or the postage costs will be determined after checkout.
