A rare American Spencer rim-fire carbine model 1865 manufactured during the time of the US Civil War. Marked on the breech SPENCER REPEATING RIFLE.CO. BOSTON MASS. PAT'D MARCH.6.1860. The barrel stamped with the manufacturing year 1865. It was patented in 1860 by Christian Spencer, a machinist who worked in Hartford. Conn. for Sharps firearms co. and he developed the Spencer on his own time. Spencer demonstrated his rifle to the Navy Department in mid 1861, the U.S. Navy put in an order with Spencer for 700 rifles, which he boosted to 1,000. When some Army officers saw the carbine work, many were so impressed they purchased them privately for themselves and their men. Spencer even had a personal shooting session with President Abraham Lincoln, following this the war department increased their orders dramatically. It became one of the most successful firearms of the US Civil War era. Overall length approx 37 inches. Good working action. In good condition. Ref 1501.
