A scarce .50 cal U. S. Smith\'s patent Civil War percussion carbine. SthCarolina markings. Ref 2061
Largest selection of genuine antique weapons for sale in UK. See our website andrewbottomley.com. Ref 2061. A scarce .50 calibre U. S. Smith's patent folding action breech-loading Civil War percussion carbine with a sling saddle ring fitted to the fore-end band, the other ring originally fitted to the underneath of the butt-stock is now missing. Engraved on the side "Smiths patent June 23rd 1857". Also engraved Poultney and Trimble, Baltimore, U S A. & Manufactured by MASS ARMS Co. Chicopee Falls. Nice solid action and locks-up tight, very strong spring. Metal is a nice deep even brown colour overall with some minor wear and signs of use. Wood is worn, scratched and dented but in overall reasonable well used condition considering it was probably carried through the U.S. Civil War. Almost the entire production of this carbine was purchased by the U.S. government. The action has been engraved to the side-plate with "S.C. 40-1-317" (Could easily stand for South Carolina). Quite possibly this engraving was put on by the original cavalry-man who carried it back in 1861-1865. Around 30 thousand carbines were manufactured all were issued to Union cavalry, they cost the sum of $32 each in 1861. A great piece of Civil War History! Overall length 39 inches. Ref 2061. This is an obsolete antique item and is sold as a collectors item only. No Licence is required in the United Kingdom.
