Largest selection of genuine antique weapons for sale in UK. See our website andrewbottomley.com. Ref 1081. An interesting iron battle axe / Halberd head / tomahawk. Probably American 18th-19th century. Overall length 16 inches with an axe blade on one side and a hook on the other. The spear point 7 inches long. The Halberd/tomahawk was an extremely effective weapon because it was very versatile. The spear point could be used to keep distance from the enemy and made it capable for a man on foot to effectively attack mounted soldiers. The slicing axe blade could cause vicious damage because the halberd could generate very powerful slices with long swings. Many halberds also had hooks opposite the blade side. This allowed the wielder to hook into the clothing of a mounted enemy and pull him to the ground. This item is very similar to plate number 11 in the book by Daniel D Hartzler & James A Knowles "Indian Tomahawks & Frontiersmen belt axes". Ref 1081.
