American Civil War 1864 Dated U.S. Army Model 1840 Bandsman’s Sword By Ames Manufacturing Company With Scabbard. Sn 14894:26 - 14894:26

This is an original American Civil War dated Model 1840 Bandsman’s Sword with scabbard. These swords were similar in design to the U.S. Army Model 1840 NCO’s sword but without the Model 1840’s Kidney shaped counter-guard (see page 211 of World Swords by Withers). It is a very good example. It has a straight 28” fullered blade. The blade is fitted with original leather hilt washer. The cutting edge of the blade has no nicks or damage. The blade is clean. The ricasso is marked on one side by the manufacturer ‘Made By Ames Mfg Co’ (upon the secession of the South, the Union lost access to their southern arsenals. Therefore, independent arms manufacturers were crucial to the success of the Union army. Ames Manufacturing Company of Chicopee, Massachusetts was one of the Union’s most important manufacturers of side arms, swords, and light artillery, and the third largest producer of heavy ordnance). The reverse is dated ‘1864’ together with ‘U.S’ Union Army mark and what appears to be ‘L.H.K’ (most likely a factory inspector’s mark). It has the correct brass hilt without Kidney shaped counter-guard and has a brass knuckle bar & ribbed brass grip. The knuckle bar is stamped with factory inspector’s mark ‘G.W.E’. The sword is complete with its black leather scabbard with brass mounts and hanging bar. The leather and stitching of the scabbard are intact but the surface of the leather has light cracks and the brass fittings some minor denting, all consistent with age and use. The price for this American Civil war collector’s piece includes UK delivery. Sn 14894:26
