The pepper-box was invented around the 1830s and was intended for civilian use, but military officers often made private purchases for their own use. James Ewell Brown “Jeb” Stuart (1833-1864) was a U. S. Army officer and later a Major General and cavalry commander for the Confederate States of America during the Civil War (1861-65). In 1857 he was shot in the chest at point blank range with a pepper-box by a Cheyenne warrior, Stuart survived probably due rumour has it, to a very weak powder charge. Engraved side plates, trigger guard, bar hammer and butt cap.Plain wooden grips. 3 inch barrels. British proof marks. In good condition showing some signs of use and wear.
