ARTISAN MADE WW2 LAST DITCH JAPANESE HOME DEFENCE FORCE SWORD (MADE IN MONTH JAPAN SURRENDERED)**August 1945 Dated Owner & Patriot Ono Ha Itoryu School Signed Tang, Scabbard, Bag / Cover & Expert Assessment. Sn 18165 - 18165

This last ditch Japanese WW2 Home Defence Force sword has been assessed by UK sword expert Bill Tagg. A copy of his notes, illustrations and rubbings of the blade markings accompany the sword. In exerts from his notes he states, ‘Made ih August 1945. Japan surrendered 15th August 1945. One of the last swords made during the war. Artisan rather than smith made. The sword blade has undergone the Yaki ire process, clay covered then forge heated. Notare in places goes on & off edge up to Mono Uchi goes right up to Shinogi finishing in a solid point. Looks oil tempered. The blade is light and well balanced. This Nakago tang is superb, well made with hawk’s feather yasuri mei and very well cut kanji’. He describes the script markings on the tang as ‘August 1945 date’, Nobu Ta Yoshi O’ (Cannot find a swordsmith using this name. Possibly owner’s name which are usually found on special order swords) & ‘Ono Ha Itoryu’ (The oldest Sword School in Japan, their motto ‘one sword gives rise to 10,000’ this is a very rare sword inscription made for homeland defence force to resist invasion of Japan by the allies)’. He describes finding this sword at a big Birmingham arms fair approx. 12yrs ago. He illustrates and describes the tsuba as ‘brass depicting 16 petal Chrysanthemum symbol of the Royal family’ and the Habaki piercing as possibly ‘a family mon badge’. In illustrations of the blade and tang he states ‘Kissaki 28mm, all hamon temper, possible very fine straight grain’. He identifies polisher’s marks on the blade under the habaki and states ‘cutting edge 63cm’ & describes the blade as ‘an interesting & rare piece of Japanese history’. The price includes UK delivery.
