**SCARCE**C1850 English, Beattie & Sons Liverpool, 50 Bore Under Hammer Percussion Traveling Boot Pistol With Brass Action & Octagonal Screw Off Barrel. A 1074. - A 1074

James Beattie was an English gunsmith recorded as working at Marylebone street, London between 1832-1835. He is also recorded as working with Henry Beattie at 205 & 223 Regent Street London in 1847 then on his own at 205 Regent Street between 1848 & 1864. Later between 1864 and 1879 James Beattie & Son are recorded at the same premises then between 1881 & 1894 James Beattie & Co are recorded at 104 Queen Victoria Street London (see page 140 of British Gunmakers Vol 1 by Brown). This is a nice box lock traveling pistol made C1850 by Beattie & Sons Liverpool. It is 9 ½” overall with a 3 ¾” screw off octagonal barrel (a tool inserted into the muzzle is required to turn off the barrel, we do not have the tool). The barrel’s bore is clean with crisp rifling. It has impressed black powder proofs on the underside of the barrel. The top barrel flat is signed ‘Beattie & Sons Liverpool’. The under hammer cocking & firing actions work crisply. The brass action has tooled decoration. The original finely chequered walnut grip with inlaid German silver escutcheon and stock ring is undamaged. The price for this rare to find pistol includes UK delivery. NB As an antique percussion pistol no licence is required to own this item in the UK if retained as a part of a collection or display.
