MINT BORE, Victorian, British Isaac Hollis & Sons Makers To Her Majesty’s War Department Military Enfield 1853 Pattern 2 Band .577 Calibre Percussion Prize Rifle With 1862 Engraved Silver Presentation Plate To Marlborough College Rifle Corps. Sn 16856 - 16856

Isaac Hollis & Sons were quality English, Birmingham & London based Gunmakers recorded in 1861 as having premises at Weaman Row & 49 Whittall Street (previously Hollis & Sheath 1849-1861). Between 1870 & 1911 Hollis & Sons are also recorded as having ‘London Offices’. They were gunmakers to Queen Victoria’s war department (see page 251 of British Gunmakers Vol.2 by Brown). This is an excellent, original British Military 2-band 1853 pattern Percussion prize rifle in .577" calibre. The action plate is signed ‘Isaac Hollis & Sons Makers To Her Majesty’s War Department’ . It has excellent all original walnut stock with chequered panel wrist and fore stock. The stock is inlaid with silver plate roundel crisply engraved ‘Marlborough College Rifle Corps Prize Rifle 23rd June 1862 Won by’ & has a name in stylised script which appears to be ‘F. Fox Cartwright’. It has a steel butt plate, steel fore end block and trigger guard with extended tang. The rifle also has its original steel ramrod, ladder rear sight, sling swivels, nipple protector with brass chain & block and blade fore sight. It has a heavy military hammer. The 33” barrel’s bore is near mint, clean with crisp rifling. The barrel has proof / inspection marks. The metal work has even patina. Total length is 48 ½”. The cocking & firing actions work perfectly. This is an antique percussion rifle and no licence is required to own it in the UK if retained as a part of a collection or display. The price includes UK delivery. Sn 16856
