Original Georgian Napoleonic Wars Era British Naval Midshipman’s Fighting Dirk With Long Rapier Blade, Brass Lion’s Head Pommel & Brass Scabbard. ED 289 - ED 289

Naval forces began to use dirks in the mid to late 1700s. Historians differ on whether dirks originated with the Danish Navy or the Royal Navy but they were widely used by England’s sea service. During the period 1780 to 1820, the Officer/ Midshipmen strength of the Royal Navy varied from about 3,500 to 6,000. Despite the popular notion that only Midshipmen used dirks, early paintings show dirks worn by high-ranking Naval Officers as well as Midshipmen. Toward the end of the 18th Century, dirks began to be worn by Naval Officers and Midshipmen on dress occasions in lieu of swords. Many fighting dirks from the Napoleonic era are found with straight double edged rapier stabbing blades ideal for use in close quarter fighting. This original British Navy Midshipman’s fighting dirk has a slim 16 ¼” slim rapier blade which is undamaged and has just natural aged staining. The blade has no manufacturer marks. The dirk measures 21 ¼” overall and has a slim lacquered wood handle which has 3 old stable secure cracks. The handle is totally secure and not loose. The dirk has a copper and brass ferrule, short curved finger guard and large brass Lion’s head pommel. The dirk is complete with its original brass scabbard which has 2 brass hanging rings. On one side, the body of the scabbard near to the throat has a purpose made hole most likely for a belt hanger or frog stud which is absent. The scabbard has just a few minor dents consistent with age and service use. Price for this Napoleonic Wars era Midshipman’s fighting dirk with scabbard includes UK delivery. ED 289
