British WD F.Barnes & Co London Enfield Royal Navy Pattern 1842 Sea Service .758” Calibre Muzzle Loading Percussion Short Rifle With Nipple Protector Chain & Lovell’s Bayonet Catch. Sn 18511

This is an original British Enfield Pattern 1842 Sea Service .758” Calibre Muzzle Loading Percussion Short Rifle. These Royal Navy rifles introduced in 1852 were shorter variants than the army P1842. Pre 1852 the pattern 1842 Sea service rifled muskets were converted from earlier smoothbore pattern muskets for Royal Navy use. They were made smaller and had the addition of rifled bores and Lovell Patent bayonet catches. After 1852 the P1842 Sea service rifled muskets were ‘new production’ and not converted weapons (see page 67 and plates 62 & 63 page 66 of British Military Longarms by Bailey). Our P1842 Sea Service Short Rifle is a ‘new’ production not a conversion made post 1852. The action pate is signed F. Barnes & Co London and has Queen’s crown (Frederick Barnes & Co were English London Gunmakers recorded at 3 Union Row, 109 Fenchurch Street and 67 Minories 1851-to 1866. Between 1857-1904 they are recorded at 109 Fenchurch Street only. See page 140 of British Gunmakers Vol.1 ‘by Brown). It has all original walnut wood work which has just light bumps and bruises consistent with age and use and regulation brass furniture. The barrel is secured by pins rather than keys indicating ‘new production’. The rifle has its original steel ramrod, Lovell’s patent Bayonet Catch, fixed fore sight, correct flip up graduated ladder rear sight, sling swivels and brass nipple protector & chain. The 30 ¼” barrel is stamped WD arrow and inspection / proof marks. Its rifled bore has just light staining consistent with age and use and 3 groove rifling of the P1842 Sea Service rifle. The cocking & firing actions work crisply. The price includes UK delivery. NB This is an antique muzzle loading percussion rifle and no licence is required to own it in the UK if retained as a part of a collection or display. Sn 18511
