1913-1914 Crawford Smuggling Operation, Irish U.V.F, 1897 Dated British WD BSA Co Martini Henry Mark 1 Converted To MK II .577x .450 Artillery Carbine With Red Hand Of Ulster and ‘For God And Ulster’ Stock Stamp & Leather Sling. Sn 14894:2 - 14894:2

The Larne gun-running was a major gun smuggling operation organised in April 1914 in Ireland by Major Frederick H. Crawford and Captain Wilfrid Spender for the Ulster Unionist Council to equip the Loyalist Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF). Other smuggling operations also secured weapons for the UVF). Smuggled UVF rifles usually bear the Red Hand Of Ulster symbol. This is an original British WD Martini Henry Artillery Carbine, one of the smuggled guns sold to the UVF. It has all original wood furniture. The stock has bumps and bruises consistent with age and use and the metalwork has even patina. The action is dated 1897 and is marked by the manufacturer BSA Co together with Crown VR (Victoria Regina). The action also has the MK1 Conversion to MK II designation. The breech and barrel also have British WD ordnance marks (all illustrated). The stock is crisply impressed with the UVF Roundel which contains the Red Hand of Ulster and motto ‘For God And Ulster’ (illustrated). It has an adjustable ladder rear sight, bayonet lug, block & blade fore sight, sling swivels, steel butt plate, cleaning rod and original leather sling. As an antique obsolete calibre carbine no licence is required to own this item in the UK if retained as part of a collection or display. NB The rifle strips cocks and dry fires but is not suitable for shooting as at some point in its life the breech has been cut internally. The price for this historic UVF marked piece includes UK delivery. Sn 14894:2
