Carabine de Versailles French Infantry Rifle 1793 Muzzleloader 14 mm Rifles

On offer is a very rare Carabine de Versailles made by Nicolas-Noel Boutet, otherwise known as the French Infantry Rifle Model 1793. Between 1793 and 1804 no more than 2500 of these rifles were made, across 3 models, this being of the first type. The rifles, made by the foremost gunmaker of his age for Napoleon Bonaparte, were intended for marksmen in the French army, but proved unpopular due to the slowness in loading compared to the smoothbore musket, hence their rarity, with very few surviving.

This example appears to have belonged to an officer, or to have been upgraded by the user, having a brass inlaid foresight, a twin leaf rearsight, rather like the British Baker Rifle, which it was probably intended to counter on the battlefield, and reeding along the length of the barrel.
The rifle comes complete with a leather sling, and a brass tipped wooden ramrod, though this is a little short and probably not original to the rifle - see pictures.
The lock has an engraved border, again raising it a bit above the standard issue model, and is marked for the Versailles factory. The barrel bears the mark for Boutet just forward of the tang, and is flared at the muzzle to facilitate easier loading, as the ball generally needed to be hammered down. It is of octagonal form, with deep 7 groove rifling, in very good condition.
The stock is in very good order for a gun of this age. There is a short split to the fore-end, running into the ramrod channel. This could be simply repaired, though I have chosen to leave the gun in it's original condition. There is a further small crack from the rearmost retaining screw opposite to the lockplate, towards the barrel. I mention this purely for the purposes of clarity, as it is barely noticeable.
The lock functions very well, holding on the half and full cock. The gun has a wonderful balance and 'feel' as you would expect from a maker of this quality.
Please take a good look at the pictures, and feel free to ask any questions.
