The English gunmaker Henry Egg (1815-1869) son of Joseph Egg, gunmakers (successor to Joseph Manton & Son) is recorded at 6 Holles Street,Cavendish Square, 1839-1842; 1 Picadilly, 1842-1850; The company was also recorded as Henry Egg 1851-1869 and Henry William Egg 1869-1880 (see BRITISH GUNMAKERS Volume 1 by Nigel Brown).This is an excellent antique cased, Tranter's Patent Victorian .297 Obsolete Calibre revolver. It is 6 ¾” overall with a 2 ½” octagonal blued barrel. The bore is clean with crisp rifling. It has a closed frame and superb finely chequered walnut grip. It is side gate loading and has a screw out ejector rod in the butt of the brass grip frame. The left side of the frame is marked 'W.Tranter's Patent' & Number '34105'. One barrel flat has 297 (calibre) and has proofs. The top of the barrel is signed ‘H. Egg 1 Picadilly London’. The cylinder has proofs. The action is double action only. The pistol is contained in its walnut case with hinged lid. The top of the lid has a void space for shield escutcheon which is absent. The case has a brass lock key absent. The case is lined with felt & has compartments for accessories. Inside the case is steel cleaning rod with brass cap. The inside of the lid has a paper trade label of Henry Egg ‘ Inventor of the copper cap and patentee of self priming percussion guns’ together with royal appointment.
