~ Circa 1800 Naval Surgeons Sword, Made In Portsmouth ~

Here we have a very fine dress sword of a naval Surgeon.

The sword is a sharply curved short sabre with the knuckle bow of the 1796. The sword appears to have never been sharpened for service and appears to be a plain sword that came with the uniform from an officers outfitters.

The brass backstrap is decorated with the coiled snake of caduceus, the staff that symbolises the medical profession.

The brass throat of the scabbard is decorated with a snake eating its own tail and the words ‘Dudley Grand Parade Portsmo’, shortened from Portsmouth, engraved inside.

The sword comes with its scabbard, original fittings and suspension ring.

    ~ Dimensions ~

The blade is 27 inches (69 cm) long.

The sword is 32 inches (81 cm) long.

The guard is 5.5 inches (14 cm) deep.

    The sword weighs 995g.

    ~Condition ~

The sword is in good condition for its age.

The sword blade has some blackening and signs of age but is otherwise in good condition.

The scabbard and fittings are in very good condition, this being a presentation sword it would not have been worn often.
