MATCHING NUMBERS, Original American Civil War Era Colt Model 1855 Root Side Hammer .28 Calibre 5 Shot Single Action Percussion Revolver With Fluted Cylinder. Sn 15042 - 15042
The Colt Model 1855 Root Side-hammer percussion Pocket Revolver was manufactured from 1855 through to 1870 originally in both .28 and .31 calibre. It was designed by Samuel Colt even-though it was named after Elisha K. Root who was Colt’s factory foreman and general superintendent. The Root revolver was Colt's only percussion handgun built on the solid frame principle and featured a side-hammer, mounted on the right side of the frame, a spur trigger, a cylinder pin entering from the rear and one-piece grip secured to the back-strap. It also has its original captive lever ram rod. This original example is in very good condition 8 ½” overall with a 3 ½” octagonal barrel. The rifled bore has just staining consistent with age and use. It has even patina throughout. It has the correct single piece Walnut grip. It has a small brass post fore sight and grooved top of frame rear sight. The fluted cylinder and top barrel flat are marked with Colts CT USA address and patent detail (all illustrated). The single action firing mechanism works as it should. The serial number 26928 is stamped on the grip frame and barrel. This is a nice example of an early pattern of colt pocket revolver.
