DEACTIVATED INERT. This is a very rare and unusual 2 Inch Whitworth Cannon Bolt (Solid shot). The projectile is easily identified by its twisted hexagonal form. These projectiles patented by Joseph Whitworth a Victorian inventor who standardised much of the British measuring and sizing of machine tools and manufacture in Manchester. During the American Civil War he supplied rifled cannon to the Confederate side. The steel projectile measures 2 inches in diameter across the hexagon sides and measures 8 inches in length. The projectile weighs 5 pound 9 ounces (2.52 kilograms) and has a round nose. The nose of the projectile is rounded and the base of the is flat.
