Pistol / Hand GunsRevolverUsed£ 2,400

Cased, Victorian British Officer’s C1850's Deane Adams & Deane London Bridge, 54 Bore Five Shot Double Action Only Spurless Muzzle Loading Percussion Revolver With Accessories. Sn 18258:2 - 18258:2

The famous English gunsmith's Deane Adams and Deane had premises at 30 King William Street, London Bridge, London in 1852. Until the arrival of Samuel Colt at the Great Exhibition of 1851 with his display of percussion revolvers, British gun makers had largely neglected this style of weapon except for pepperbox revolvers. The arrival of Colt with his American methods of promoting business caused much resentment in the British gun trade. The outcome was a surge in quality revolver design and production by British makers including Deane Adams & Deane. This is an excellent, original, cased, Deane Adams & Deane 5 shot percussion revolver with spurless hammer. The weapon's firing mechanism works as it should, correctly, in double action only. It has a 6” octagonal barrel (11 ¾” overall). The rifled bore is clean. The barrel has a blade fore sight & notched plate on the frame rear sight. The top of the frame and top barrel flat are crisply marked 'Deane Adams & Deane 30 King William Street, London Bridge'. It has foliate engraving to the frame & trigger guard. The frame is engraved ‘Adams Patent’ and ‘No. 8261R’. The cylinder is marked ‘No.8261R’ and has proof mark. The barrel also has English black powder proofs. It’s finely chequered walnut grip is in excellent undamaged condition and it has a steel butt plate. The pistol's metal work is undamaged with original blue finish which has even patina. The pistol is contained in its original wood case with hinged lid. The top of the lid is inlaid with a void central brass roundel. The case has a brass lock (key absent). The case is lined with green felt and has a nice Deane Adams & Deane trade label. The case has compartments which contain accessories including 2 empty japanned metal tins with removable lids. One lid is crisply embossed with ‘Eley’s’ company detail, a white metal oil tin with screw top id and integral oil applicator. The tin is marked ‘Dixon & Sons’, a brass and steel bullet mould which is war dept ‘WD’ marked and has calibre detail ‘54’, a steel tool, a quantity of moulded lead balls & bullets in a Deane Adams & Deane labelled Chamois leather pouch, a wood cleaning rod with interchangeable brass heads, 3 spare nipples and a copper & brass powder flask marked ‘James Dixon & Sons Sheffield’. The price for this cased pistol with accessories includes UK delivery. NB As an antique percussion revolver no licence is required to own this item in the UK if retained as part of a collection or display. Sn 18258:2
