Durs Egg (1748–1831) was a Swiss-born British gunmaker, noted for his quality pistols and for his company's production of the Ferguson rifle. Egg was apprenticed in Solothurn and Paris before establishing his own business in London in 1772. He was a contemporary of Joseph Manton, Jean Samuel Pauly and the uncle of Joseph Egg.During the Peninsular War, Wellington organized his cavalry into The Cavalry Division from June 1809 under Major-General Sir William Payne. On 19 June 1811, the cavalry was reorganised as two divisions and The Cavalry Division was redesignated as 1st Cavalry Division with the formation of the 2nd Cavalry Division. This is an original, un-messed with original Officer’s private purchase Light Dragoon Flintlock Pistol by Durs Egg, Regiment marked ‘B1’ to B Squadron 1st Cavalry Division . It is 15 ½” overall length, with lock plate signed by the quality maker ‘D.Egg’. It has regulation brass furniture including brass cudjel butt cap and trigger guard with extended tang. The trigger guard is Regiment marked ‘B1’. It has its wood ram rod with brass end cap, ram rod flute and walnut full stock which has just bumps and bruises to be expected with age and service use. The smooth bore of the 9” round steel barrel has just light staining consistent with age & use. The barrel has black powder proof marks. The lock’s cocking and firing actions work as they should and the hammer is fitted with flint. The price includes UK delivery. NB. As an antique flintlock pistol no licence is required to own this item in the UK if retained as a part of a collection or display. Sn 16608
