Description

EXTREMELY RARE, ORIGINAL, C1600 Elizabethan Era Italian Renaissance Form Rapier Sword With Early Swept Hilt. Sn 14816 - 14816

Rapier is a loose term for a type of slender, sharply pointed sword. With such design features, the rapier is optimized to be a thrusting weapon, but cutting or slashing attacks were also recorded in some historical treatises. In the Elizabethan era (1558-1603) which Historians often depict as the golden age in English history, the size of a Gentleman’s Rapier indicated his status at court. These weapons were mainly used in Early Modern Europe during the 16th and 17th centuries. Our example is a massive 48” overall length. It has with a 39” double edged Rapier blade with fullers and as such must have been owned by a very important nobleman. Our example is Italian Renaissance form and both sides of the blade have indistinct markings (illustrated). The blade is undamaged and has just the staining consistent with age. The ornate swept bar hilt with upturned clam shells and gilt wire binding is similar in form to a rapier illustrated on page 525 item 3 of the book ‘A Glossary Of The Construction, Decoration & Use Of Arms & Armour’ by Stone which he describes as being made C1600. The price for this ancient Rapier in excellent condition includes UK delivery. Sn 14816 ** N.B. This Rapier is guaranteed to be period with an un-limited guarantee. It is NOT a Victorian copy.***
