An English sidehammer percussion pistol of large size and calibre, made for British Government use by J Harding & Son of London and dated 1840. These pistols made by J Harding are known to have been carried on Mail Coaches and by Police / revenue services through most of the 19th century. Overall length 15.5 inches. Ref 9475. J. Harding was under royal contract to make pistols for the Coach Guards for Her Majesty's Mail Coaches, he is also known to have made pistols, blunderbusses and carbines for the police and British revenue services.
