An original WW2 era 2nd Pattern Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm pilot's Type C leather flying helmet. These helmets were introduced in 1941 (see page 53 & 215 of the book Vintage Flying Helmets by Prodger). The helmet is made of the correct brown leather with correct chamois leather lining and padded leather ear roundels. It has the correct webbing chin strap, press stud fasteners, hook and straps. It also has the correct leather ear cups with brass zips which contain their original Gosport communication tubes with removable caps, original foam and grease paper padding and earphones. The helmet is wired for communication with WD / stores code marked ear phones and with Bakelite jack. The helmet is clean and undamaged with just light service wear. The lining has a contemporary hand written ink names ‘Martins’ & ‘Cove’ no doubt the names RAF Pilots issued with this helmet (illustrated). The helmet is a small head size approx. UK size 6 and has no visible WD model, maker or date markings. The helmet comes with an original pair of WW2 RAF MK VIII Goggles with which the helmet was found. Considered the ultimate RAF flying goggles of WW2 and in fact the last used by the RAF before switching to fibreglass helmets with wrap around visors the MK VIII was introduced in 1943, they had split angled lenses in streamlined grey painted frames hinged in the centre and backed with thickly padded leather cushions. MK VIII goggles were issued with an elasticated headband strap (see page 34 of Luftwaffe vs RAF by Prodger). The goggles are clean & undamaged with just light service wear and have the correct elasticated strap. There are no visible manufacturer or date marks on the goggles or strap. The display head illustrated in the images is not included. The price for this helmet worthy of further research regarding the pilot names includes UK delivery. Sn 15703:14
