Victorian Era French/ German (Alsace) Bamboo Cane Sword Stick, Blade By ‘Coulaux & Cie Klingenthal’ With Root Ball Handle. Sn 12188 - 12188

At the beginning of the 18th century, king Louis XV decided to create a state-controlled sword manufacturing company in order to limit the imports of Solingen blades to France. In 1733, the Manufacture d'Armes Blanches d' Alsace commenced operation with the help of 25 skilled workers from Solingen, Germany. The Alsace province, in East of France, was chosen for the availability of iron mines and forges. In 1768, accommodation for the Director and his staff (artillery officers) was built in a place called Klingenthal (Klingen=blades, thal= valley), the factory became Manufacture de Klingenthal . Under this name, quality blades were produced until the end of the 19th century. There is no doubt that Coulaux was one of the best known entrepreneur companies of Klingenthal. The Coulaux brothers were in business from February 1801 and the family remained in charge of the management of the Manufacture de Klingenthal throughout the Franco-Prussian War when Alsace became German occupied territory. This is an excellent original bamboo cane sword stick in the form popular in the Victorian era made by Coulaux & Cie Klingenthal. The attractive handle is formed from a bamboo root ball. It has a 19 ½” square blade which tapers to a pin sharp point. In its scabbard the sword stick measures 35 ½” overall. The blade has some staining consistent with age and is nicely marked on one side ‘Coulaux & Cie’ together with Crown marks & number ‘5’. The opposite side is marked ‘Klingenthal’ with Crown marks. The scabbard has a brass ferrule at the tip. Price includes UK delivery. Sn 12188
