Create my profile now!Shibayama is an art form that originated in Japan introduced in the 18th Century by Shibayama Dosho. It is the art of semi-precious inlay on lacquer and other materials. The items decorated in the Shibayama style range from vases, boxes and table-screens to swords. The art form was also performed by Chinese craftsmen. This is a stunning Japanese or Chinese antique Victorian era walking stick with exquisite shibayama bone handle and hallmarked silver collar. The shibayama bone handle is beautifully decorated with inlaid insects formed from tortoise shell, mother of pearl and semi precious stones. The underside of the handle has an oriental script signature either of the craftsmen or as is common with shibayama pieces a meaning of life proverb (such as health, good luck, happiness etc). The main shaft is Rosewood and has a later rubber end cap fitted to protect the tip. The silver collar has unreadable faint hallmarks.The condition of the handle is excellent with no damage to the handle or insects. The cane measures 30 ½” overall length and the handle is 4”.
