George 3rd Royal Artillery Transitional Spadroon Sabre

~ George 3rd Royal Artillery Transitional Spadroon Sabre By Dawes ~

This beautiful piece comes with its gilt brass black leather scabbard.

It was owned by Lieutenant Colonel John Kearsley.

Records show that on September 3rd 1779 he was a Lieutenant of the 16th Royal American Regiment, 4th Battalion under Sir Guy Carlenton K.B.

Later records dating to 1810 and 1812 indicate that he was a surgeon of the Royal Regiment of Artillery and in 1814 an Assistant Surgeon General and Deputy Inspector.

His records stop during 1815 and 1816 and can be found again on the Army list for 1824 as a ‘permanent half pay ‘ under Ordinance Medical Department. Paper work is included.

Due to the sword’s transitional pattern we can assume that the piece dates back to 1810-1814. Also the rank of Lt. Col. is appropriate to either the Surgeon or the Assistant Surgeon General and Deputy Inspector commissions.

The blade is beautifully decorated with a blue and gilt ricasso.

The engravings on the ricasso read on one side ‘Warranted’ and on the other ‘Dawes Birmingham’. The edge is marked in gold ‘Lieut. Col. Kearsley’.

On one side of the blade, amongst leaves, the goddess Athena is depicted holding a spear and shield, beneath the George 3rd monogram and crown.

The other side depicts the goddess Themis (Lady Justice) blindfolded, holding a sword in one hand and the balance in the other beneath the Royal Coat of Arms and arms and banners.

The hilt is made of gilt brass in the spadroon pattern and decorated with a flaming grenade.

The grip is made of wired ivory with a lion head shaped pommel and a suspension ring.

The decorated black leather scabbard has gilt brass fittings and two suspension rings.

~ Dimensions ~

The blade length is 30 ½ inches (77.5 cm) and the overall length of the sword is35 ½ inches (90.4 cm).

The overall length of the sword and scabbard is 36 ½ inches (92.7 cm).

It weighs 1 Kg.

~ Condition ~

The blade is excellent with clear etchings and damage free.

The ivory grip has a minor chip and a few very small cracks.

The hilt is in good condition with a crack at the top end of the flaming grenade.

The scabbard has a fair amount of age wear but its overall condition remains good.

~ Postage ~

UK postage is £18 or the sword can be collected from our shop in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.Read more
