    MINT BORE, QUALITY, Victorian, Cased, George Gibbs Bristol Metford’s Patent .461 Gibbs Obsolete Centre Fire Calibre Breech Loading, Box Lock Break Action Double Barrel Hunting Rifle With Original Accessories. Sn 16792 - 16792

    George Gibbs (1811-1884) was an English Gunsmith recorded as working in Bristol between 1830 and 1884 both on his own and as J & G Gibbs (1835-41) at various addresses in Bristol including Redcliffe Street, Thomas Street 29 Corn Street and the Lewins Mead Factory St John’s Bridge Bristol. His family business continued after his death and was recorded as operating in Bristol and London throughout the Victorian era, both World Wars and post war into the modern era finally closing in the year 2000 (see page 225 of Brown’s book British Gunmakers Vol 2). This is a cased quality double hunting rifle George Gibbs, 29 Corn Street, Bristol. The rifle has double 28” round steel barrels. The bores are near mint, clean with crisp rifling. The barrels have a blade fore sight and ‘v’ notch plate rear sight graduated ‘100’ (yards) with additional leaf sight graduated ‘200’ (yards).The barrel rib is signed ‘George Gibbs 29 Corn Street Bristol Metfords Patent 1338’. The underside of the barrels have proofs and ‘48’ markings. They are each numbered ‘12881’ which is repeated on the trigger guard tang. It has beautiful all original undamaged Walnut stock with ribbed polished horn butt plate. The wood has an inlaid silver escutcheon with monogram ‘GCW’ most likely the original owner’s initials. The stock wrist and removable fore stock have fine chequering. The fore stock lever assembly It has double triggers and the action, trigger guard and fore stock lever assembly & under lever have best quality tooled decoration. The fore stock lever assembly is marked ‘Patent’. The action ‘Gibbs Patent 362’ & the under lever ‘George Gibbs’. The action has a lever safety bolt under which is, highlighted in gold the warning indicator ‘bolted’. The underside of the barrel rib and shoulder stock have sling swivel lugs. Its loading and firing actions work as they should. The weapon is contained in its original canvas and leather covered wood case with hinged lid. The case has a hinged lid with carry handle, leather straps with buckles and brass catch with lock (key absent). It is baize lined and the inside of the lid has a nice original George Gibbs trade label (illustrated). The inside of the case is contoured to fit the rifle and it's many accessories some of which are contained in their own removable box with lid. The accessories include include a sectional screw fit cleaning rod, several wood handled tools, oil tin with screw top lid, brass bullet mould marked ‘450/480’ , a quantity of moulded lead bullets, empty shell casings head stamped ‘461 No.1 Gibbs’, brass loading tool, primers, leather sling with metal screw bolts which fit the rifle’s sling lugs perfectly, a period Rangoon oil tin and empty period sporting gun powder tin.
