An excellent Victorian 10 Bore double barrel shotgun. It has Walnut furniture with finely chequered wrist and fore stock panels. The underside of the fore stock has a void silver diamond shaped escutcheon. The shotgun with double 29”, round steel barrels with brass bead fore sight, has double hammers & triggers. It measures 45 ¾” overall. The barrels smooth bores are clean. The barrel rib has indistinct lettering (to faint to photograph). The barrels have black powder proofs. The action tang and trigger guard with extended tang & acanthus bud finial have foliate engraved foliate decoration. Both side plates are engraved with foliate decoration and are signed by the maker ‘Playfair’, most likely George Playfair recorded in 1874 as having premises at 13 Newton Street, Birmingham (see page 308 of British Gunmakers Vol 2 by Brown). It is complete with brass capped wood ram rod. The cocking & firing actions of the weapon work perfectly as they should. Price includes UK delivery. NB As an antique muzzle loading percussion shotgun no licence is required to own this item in the UK if retained as part of a collection or display. Sn 15990 ...Read full description
