C1850, Victorian English, George Waller Horsham Sussex, Double Damascus Barreled 16 Bore Muzzle Loading Percussion Sporting Shotgun With Rare Early Grip Safety. A 1072 - A 1072

George Waller was a Horsham Sussex based gunmaker recorded as working between 1838-1851. The company is recorded as Waller & Hurst in 1858 (see page 105 of English gunmakers by Bailey & nie). This is an excellent Victorian double barrel muzzle loading percussion shotgun by George Waller. It has all original Walnut furniture with chequered panels at the wrist and fore stock. The wood has just light bumps and bruises to be expected with age & has a steel butt plate. The shotgun with double 28”, Damascus steel barrels, has double hammers & triggers. It measures 45 ¾” overall. The barrel has a brass bead fore sight. The action, hammers and trigger guard with extended tang have foliate engraved decoration. The action plates also have game birds in the field scenes and are signed ‘G.Waller’. The underside of the wrist has a rare to find, early form of grip safety which does not allow the hammers to fire unless the safety bar is pressed at the same time as pulling each trigger. The cocking & firing actions of the weapon work crisply. The barrels smooth bores are clean. The Shotgun has an ebonised wood ram rod with brass end cap and worm. The price includes UK delivery. NB As an antique muzzle loading percussion shotgun no licence is required to own this item in the UK if retained as part of a collection or display. A 1072
