Create my profile now!In 1826 the renowned Rockingham Street & Washington Works, Sheffield Knife maker George Wostenholm was admitted as a freeman of the Cutler's Company and was granted the now world famous 'I*XL' trademark which was an old trademark originally granted to W.A. Smith in 1787(see pages 295-303 of The Sheffield Knife Book By Tweedale). Many Of Wostenholm’s knife designs targeted the expanding American market. This is a Victorian, George Wostenholm & Son I*XL Bowie Knife made for the American market. The 6” Bowie blade has a scalloped section back edge. The blade is etched with scroll work together with "The Americans Pride U*S Equal Rights Equal Laws And Justice" and manufacturer name” IXL Geo Wostenholm & Son Sheffield England”. The blade has no damage and just staining consistent with age. It has undamaged stag antler scales secured by brass pins & re-curving brass cross guard. Its open top brown leather scabbard has riveted and stitched edges and 2 holes near to the throat for cord or rivets for belt loop which are absent. All leather is clean and intact.
