Georgian Era C1750 British Naval Midshipman’s Dirk With Heavy Curved Fighting Blade, Brass Lion’s Head Pommel Ebonised Wood Hilt & Steel Scabbard. Sn 18123:2 - 18123:2

Naval forces began to use dirks in the mid to late 1700s. Historians differ on whether dirks originated with the Danish Navy or the Royal Navy but they were widely used by England’s sea service. During the period 1780 to 1820, the Officer/ Midshipmen strength of the Royal Navy varied from about 3,500 to 6,000. Despite the popular notion that only Midshipmen used dirks, early paintings show dirks worn by high-ranking Naval Officers as well as Midshipmen. This original British Navy Midshipman’s fighting dirk has an 11 ½” long heavy steel single edged curved & fullered blade which is undamaged and has light staining consistent with age. The blade has no visible manufacturer or date marks. The dirk measures 16 ¼” overall and has an ebonised wood handle with re-curving brass cross guard and Lion’s head pommel with mane descending the brass back strap. The dirk is complete with steel scabbard which has 2 steel hanging rings. The scabbard a few small dents. One dent near to the tip is pierced with 2 small holes. The holes and dents are totally secure and only visible on close inspection. The price for this Georgian era Midshipman’s dirk with scabbard includes UK delivery. Sn 18123:2
