**RARE**'FIRST PRE-CHARGED PNUEMATIC AIR RIFLE**1850- 1870’s, Giffard Patent 4.5mm Ball (.177 Calibre) Air Rifle With Removable Air Reservoir. Sn 18622 - 18622

French engineer Paul Giffard came from a family with a history of experimenting with compressed gasses. His older brother Henri had worked on developing airships, and is credited with having made the world's first powered flight in a dirigible on December 21, 1852. Paul, who later developed the world's first successful CO2-powered gun, worked with his brother before becoming involved in the liquefaction and compression of gasses. Among his 200 patented inventions are a pneumatic telegraph, which employed air pressure contained within tubes to transmit messages, and the now-familiar pneumatic tubes used at drive-in banks and other businesses for fast delivery of documents, currency, and other small items. During the 1850s, Giffard patented a single-shot pneumatic breech-loading gun that featured a pump and air reservoir located under the barrel. In 1872 he owned patents for guns with large-capacity reservoirs and a system of regulating the amount of gas necessary for each shot, thereby making it possible to fire multiple shots from a single propellant cartridge. These arms, included pistol, rifle, and smoothbore versions in 4.5mm, 6mm, and 8mm calibres. This is a rare, very good, original Giffard patent 4.5mm calibre Air Rifle with removable air reservoir made C1850's-1870’s. It has a 24 ½” rifled barrel with clean bore and typical light rifling and measures 42 ¼” overall. It has even patina. The original Walnut stock with chequered panel wrist is undamaged. The chequered horn butt plate has Giffard’s hot air balloon trademark and ‘Paul Giffard Inventor’ within banner. The screw off cylinder has ribbed bands and the end cap near to the breech end has marks ‘all Illustrated’. The cylinder is numbered 20536. The rifle has a blade fore sight & adjustable rear sight. The rifle is un-charged & not checked but is complete and original. The rifle is fitted with sling swivels. The price for this rare first of its type air rifle which is a key piece of historic air weapon development includes UK delivery. Sn 18622
