Early 1900’s British Pattern 1827 Rifle Brigade Officer's Sword With King’s Crown Etched Blade By Hawkes & Co London & Scabbard. Sn 14667:7 - 14667:7

Originally raised as the King’s Royal Rifle Corps in 1755, the Rifle Brigade was officially formed in 1800. Initially Officer’s carried a lighter version of the 1796 pattern Light cavalry sabre, later adopting the 1803 pattern Infantry Officer’s Sword with strung bugle motif placed within the knuckle bow. The Regiment, always renowned for its individuality both in uniform and tactics, it was no wonder that they eventually gained their own distinctive pattern of sword. The 1827 pattern is defined by an all steel hilt coupled with the replacement of the usual Royal Cypher with a strung bugle in the hilt .This is a very good, original example 1827 Pattern Sword with Scabbard. It has an 83cm long blade with fullers (98 cm overall). The blade has just light staining consistent with age and is etched on both sides with foliate panels including King’s crown with Royal cypher on one side and King’s crown with Rifle Brigade badge on the reverse . It also has the ordnance acceptance star with inlaid roundel at the ricasso on one side and manufacturer detail 'Hawkes & Co 14 Piccadilly London W’ on the reverse. The back of the blade has a small inspection mark and is numbered ‘7336’ which may assist to identify the Rifle Brigade Officer who commissioned this sword. It has a voided knuckle guard with the correct Rifle Brigade King’s crown with strung bugle motif, curved stepped pommel with ball end and fish skin grip with silver wire binding. The wire is tight and intact. The fish skin is secure but does have small areas of wear to be expected with age and service use. It is complete with steel scabbard with 2 fixed hanging rings. The scabbard has even patina and no dents or damage. The throat of the scabbard is numbered ‘174’. The price includes UK delivery. Sn 14667:7
