High-Quality British-made Infantry Officers Sword. 1854 Pattern Infantry Officers Sword. Swords

    BladesSwordsUsed£ 550

This is a top-quality Victorian Infantry Officers Sword and was made for use on active service as the sword has a point, cutting edge and gully and has a few nicks in the cutting edge that indicates that it was used on active service.

This would have been a very expensive sword when it was made:it has a fabulous brass scabbard that has a few minor dents,as you would expect from a sword used on active service and is 145 years old.
The sword was retailed by Hobson and Son's of Little Windmill Street,London,a top-quality military retailer of the time and it has a 32" blade and is 38" overall length and the blade has the six-pointed seal of Solomon, used by British makers as a sign of quality since 1827.
The blade is engraved with the owners name: E.R.DeHavilland,who I believe was a member of the famous DeHavilland family (at various times they used both one and two L's in their surname) and since the owner has been dead for over a hundred years, you can obtain his full service records and a search through British military records,The Imperial War Museum,Officers Gazette etc should prove fruitful.
The actress Olivia DeHavilland, who starred in films from the 1930's,1940's and into the 1980's and is still alive at the incredible age of 102 is a member of the Dehavilland family and the Dehavilland aircraft company also manufactured many famous aircraft such as the Mosquito,"the wooden wonder",the Tiger Moth and Gypsy Moth and the Vampire, among many others.
It is very seldom that a sword has a name engraved on it or can be traced to a named Officer and that makes this sword a very rare sword and much easier to research the military service of the owner of the sword, his promotions, postings, decorations etc.

The hilt of the sword is also brass and carries the cipher for Queen Victoria and the shark skin grip and leather washer are all original and in good condition, much better than you will see on many swords of this age.
This is a top-quality sword for the collector or for a display piece focal point.
You can't now legally send swords or other weapons through the post so the buyer will need to collect the sword and I will pay £50 for your fuel cost.
Payment is by papal, cleared cheque or bank transfer and cash only....Read full description
