C1880’s American ‘Navy XL’ .38-100 Rim Fire Obsolete Calibre Nickel Plated 6 Shot Single Action Revolver. Sn 17641:3 - 17641:3

Hopkins & Allen Arms Company was a U.S. firearms manufacturing company based in Norwich, Connecticut that was founded in 1868 by Charles W. Allen, Charles A. Converse, Horace Briggs, Samuel S. Hopkins and Charles W. Hopkins. The Hopkins brothers ran the day-to-day operations of the company until it went bankrupt in 1916 and was subsequently bought by Marlin-Rockwell. This is a rare to find, Hopkins & Allen XL Navy Model Single Action Revolver in .38-100 Rimfire, made circa 1880. Only several hundred are thought to have been made. Hopkins & Allen are known for their generally small and inexpensive pocket-sized revolver produced for the ordinary citizen in the last half of the 19th and first half of the 20th Centuries. However, they are increasingly recognized as the makers of Army, Navy and Police Revolvers like this one, Flayderman had this to say: “Collectors consider the XL Army and Navy as the finest quality handguns made under the Hopkins & Allen name. They were their only revolvers that could be rated as serviceable for military use”. While there is no documentation that these were ever used in a martial setting, it is not surprising that the company would develop such weapons in the hopes of obtaining a government contract. This revolver is single action port and has the correct unique pivoting ejector rod released by operation of a press lever on the frame. The top strap is marked “XL NAVY/38-100 CAL”. The pistol’s finish has been re-nickeled to a high standard at some point in its life. It has a 6” round steel barrel (10 ½” overall). The rifled bore is clean with crisp rifling. The underside of the barrel is numbered '770'. It has a brass blade fore sight, grooved frame rear sight and undamaged polished horn grip. The single action firing mechanism works as it should. The price includes UK delivery. NB As an antique obsolete calibre rim fire revolver no licence is required to own this pistol in the UK if retained as a part of a collection or display. Sn 17641:3
