1880 Imperial Russian Infantry Model 1870 / Berdan II Single Shot Bolt Action 10.7×58mmR Obsolete Calibre Rifle. Sn 17099:21 - 17099:21

The Berdan rifle is a Russian rifle created by famous American firearms expert and inventor Hiram Berdan in 1868. Berdam rifles were standard issue in the Russian Army from 1870 to 1891. The model of 1870, or Berdan II, is a single shot bolt action with a distinctive short, pear-shaped, bolt handle. The bolt handle serves as the only locking lug for the action, and when closed, points upwards at a 30 degree angle, rather than horizontally. The Berdan II Infantry rifles were issued with quadrangular socket bayonets. Initial production of the Berdan II was at Birmingham Small Arms in England. The rifles were later manufactured in large numbers by Russian factories at Tula, Izhevsk, and Sestroretsk. The rifle was known for its accuracy, simplicity and reliability. The 10.7×58mmR cartridge used in the Berdan rifles was also invented by Hiram Berdan, with assistance of Russian Colonel Gorloff. This is a very good original example of the Berdan II Infantry rifle. Its original wood work has the knocks bumps and bruises to be expected with age and service use. The rifle measures 53” overall and has a 33” round steel barrel. The rifled bore has staining and residue consistent with age and use. The weapon has a block and blade fore sight, ladder rear sight, steel butt plate and one sling swivel. It has the correct pear shaped bolt. The stock is impressed with indistinct roundel. The barrel is marked with crisp Russian Script, numbered ‘105168’ and dated ‘1880’. The bolt is numbered ‘33740’. The metal work has several other small inspection marks including the Russian Eagle. The rifle’s cocking and firing actions work as they should. The price for this rare Imperial Russian Infantry rifle includes UK delivery. As an obsolete calibre antique rifle no licence is required to own this item in the UK if retained as part of a collection or display. Sn 17099:21
