INERT DEACTIATED. RARE. COW (Coventry Ordnance Works) 1½ Pounder (37x190) Practice Factory Presentation Round Dated 1919. Sn 17957 - 17957

INERT DEACTIATED. This is a Rare COW (Coventry Ordnance Works) 1½ pounder factory presentation round produced at the Basford National Ordnance Factory (Coventry Ordnance Works, Ltd.), Nottingham for presentation in 1919 after the cessation of hostilities. The Basford factory took over production of the 1 ½ pounder COW gun in 1917 from the Coventry Ordnance Works and continued manufacture until its closure in March 1919. This round was made using factory service components and assembled as a factory presentation round after WW1. This weapon was originally developed and an aircraft mounted weapon firing a 37mm projectile and was in continuous development throughout WW1. The gun was loaded with a five-round cartridge clip and was ready to produce only as the First World War came to an end. The gun was only in service briefly, fitted to a DH4 aircraft. The gun was tried post war in a number of different aircraft, mostly flying boats such as the Blackburn Perth, where it was seen as being effective against small vessels. During WW2, the gun again saw action in RAF airfield defence. This is an unfired round and the brass cartridge case is engraved on the side BASFORD NO (National Ordnance) FACTORY 1919. The cartridge case is fitted with a dummy plug where the primer is fitted. The boat tailed practice projectile has a capped armour piercing profile and is stamped on the side P(practice) 1 ½ PR M/K III GUN I and CI(cast iron) BE-EA 4 18(April 1918 date). The price includes UK delivery and no licence is required to possess this inert round in the UK if retained as part of a collection or display. Sn 17957
