INERT DEACTIVATED. This is a rare original British Boer War period 1900 Dated shrapnel shell fired by a British Erhardt 15Pr Quick Firing gun. There are 28 groves in the driving band and the Erhardt gun used a separate loaded cartridge case. The 15 Pounder breach loading field gun has 18 groove rifling. The shell is stamped on the side 3/3/1900 (March 1900) 5/1900 (May 1900). The base is stamped 15Pr IV (15 Pounder mark 4) F S (Forged Steel) V(Vickers). The brass No. 56 time and percussion fuse is stamped 9/?0 R N EOC monogram (Elswick Ordnance Company). 686 . See Hogg British Artillery Weapons and Ammunition 1914 – 1914 pages 72-73.
