INERT DEACTIVATED. This is nice a piece of British trench art made from a number 82 nose fuse mounted on the top of a 4.5 inch Howitzer Shrapnel shell top and converted into an inkwell. This fuse was a modified British No 80 time and percussion fuse and the time element was altered at the lower settings by a small steel plate riveted on to the bottom time ring by three brass rivets. The fuse has had the insides removed and the top hinged to open with a brass hinge. This would originally have held a glass ink pot. The fuse is mounted on a turned circular plinth. The brass fuse adaptor at the top of the shell body is nicely engraved Festubert May 1915. The Battle at Festubert was to try and break the attrition of trench warfare and ease the pressure on the Ypres front. This took and took place with British forces between the 15th and 27th of May, 1915. British forces attacked at Aubers Ridge on the 9-10 and 15th May 1915 followed by the Canadian Brigades on the 24th May 1915. The fuse is nicely stamped on the alloy top No82 II, 2/14 (February 1914 date of manufacture) and the manufacturers monogram. No licence is required to possess this piece of British trench art in the UK if retained as part of a collection or display. The price includes UK delivery. O 1732
