INERT DEACTIVATED. This is a rare, unfired British WW1 (1916 dated) No 31 nose fuse for the 4 inch R.M.L. light trench mortar. The fuse was a modified British No 80 time and percussion fuse and the time element was altered at the lower settings by a small steel plate riveted on to the bottom time ring by three brass rivets. The No 80 fuse was further modified by a new alloy nose cap with a hexagon on the top with a hole in the top the alloy top is stamped No.31 1.C V.S,M (Vickers, Son and Maxim) 8/16 (August 1916 date). The alloy base of the fuse is stamped 80IAA (original fuse designation before modification) 376A V.S.M. (Vickers, Son and Maxim) 2/16 (February 1916 date). The fuse is complete with the percussion plunger under the alloy top cap. No licence is required to possess this in the UK if retained as part of a collection or display.
