Italian M1870/87/15 Vetterli Bayonet, Scabbard And Frog. BAYO 290 - BAYO 290
This is the final version of the M1870 Vetterli bayonet which has had the original 20.375 inch blade officially shortened to 9.125inches and had the quillon removed. On entering WW1, Italy found itself seriously short of arms and many of the old Vetterli rifles had their 10.5mm barrels inner sleeved to take the 6.5mm Carcano cartridge. The original bayonets were shortened in order to conform approximately to the Carcano 6.5mm rifle with its bayonets fixed. This bayonet has the 9.125 inch blade with the fuller running to the tip. The crossguard has ZW8763 and C.N. in an oval stamped on it. The pommel is all steel and is fixed to the blade by a nut on the top. The grip plates are of composite material and the leaf spring is the 1st pattern long version. Later models had a much shorter leaf spring. The scabbard is brass mounted leather and is fitted with a standard Italian leather frog. See The Bayonet Book by White and Watts, item 437 on pages 190 and 197. The price includes U.K. delivery.
