C1890’s Late Meiji Period Japanese Aikuchi with scabbard. The Aikuchi’s blade has a cutting edge of just under 7”. The tang is unsigned. The Aikuchi has been assessed by UK Japanese sword expert Bill Tagg. A copy of his hand written notes and drawing of the blade accompany the sword. In extracts from his notes he states “Hira Zukuri (flat) no ridge line. I have seen a lot of them over the years. Basic smith work with a low temperature forging which produces Nioi crystals. Grain looks O Tame (large wood grain).In old polish good condition. Mounts are black lacquer wood scabbard mounted in horn to match hilt. Horn mounts fish skin wrap to handle. No menuki have been used. Medium export quality made late Meiji period Circa 1890’s. Tang end is Kuri Jiri shape, decorative Sujiki (slanting) file marks. Hamon is Notare (undulating)”.
