**MINT, ANCIENT, HUGE LONG SWORD BLADE, CUT DOWN TO KATANA SIZE C1550**Tsuba Myochin Artist Signed ‘Mune Aki’ Scabbard & Later Carry Bag Cover & Expert Assessment. ED 2558 - ED 2558

This is an original Ancient Japanese long sword blade, cut down to katana size circa 1550 . The tang is un-signed. The sword has been assessed by UK Japanese sword expert Bill Tagg. A copy of his hand written notes and illustration of the blade & tang characteristics accompany the sword. In extracts from his notes he states “This is a very old sword. Entire tang (Nakago) been cut off and machi (notches) moved down. This was done a long time ago. There is plainly blade steel showing in in (new) tang which supports the shortening theory. They were cut to comply with changes to laws and changes in use. Biggest change Circa 1550 when war Lord Oda Nobunaga banned the wear of huge long swords. This is a puzzle. My first thought was a cut down Naga Maki big bladed halbard / pole arm who9se leaf shaped blades are 3 to 4 feet length with shaft of 2 to 3 feet. Very scarce now, not many survive in original un-touched condition. It could also be a Naginata Naoshi blade made in the shape of a spear. Definitely Pree I Goo Koto old sword period been restored in last 50 years with an hadori polish which obscures the hamon (very thin). Grain is fine itame. One scratch some open grain on back edge otherwise mint. In re-lacquered saya rebound (good work) tsuka with old iron mounts (bit worn) nice quality menuki tsuba is iron signed ‘Mune Aki’ from Ki late edo period. Possibly a Myochino artist. Pierced with 2 raindrops edged with brass. Good qulity iron nice patination. A very fine looking sword worthy of serious study’In illustrations of the blade and tang he notes ‘ cutting edge now 23 ¾”. Overall length now 30 ½”, widest (part of blade) 30mm. New Nakago Jiri’. Also included is a later carry bag cover with draw cord. The price for this ancient blade worthy of further research includes UK delivery. ED 2558
