John Rigby & Company (or John Rigby & Co. (Gunmakers) Ltd) is the oldest gunmaking firm in continuous operation in the English-speaking world. Rigby has a distinguished history of technological advancement for both sporting and military application. Rigby rifles, guns and pistols have played prominent roles throughout the British Empire and particularly in Asia and Africa. The company was established by the first John Rigby in Dublin, Ireland in 1775. After the founding John Rigby's death, in 1818, his sons William and John Jason Rigby operated the business as W. & J. Rigby from circa 1820 to 1865, a period that spanned flintlock, percussion, pinfire and needlefire ignition and marked the start of the modern metallic cartridge era. Rigby was a leader in barrel-making and rifling technology and, at the time, it was also recognised for its high grade duelling pistols. John Rigby & Co opened their St James Street, London shop in 1865. This is an excellent Cased, John Rigby & Co St James Street, London, Tranter's Patent .32 RF Obsolete Calibre revolver made C1880 with accessories. It is 8 ½” overall with a 3 ½” octagonal barrel. The barrel’s rifled bore has just light staining consistent with age and use. It has a closed frame and superb finely chequered Walnut grip. It is side gate loading & has a sheathed trigger. The left side of the frame is marked 'W.Tranter's Patent' & Number '10048'. The top barrel flat is nicely engraved 'JNo Rigby & Co St James St London’. The barrel and cylinder are stamped with English black powder proof marks. The action is crisp, correctly in single action only. The pistol is contained in its Walnut case with hinged lid. The top of the lid is inlaid with a void central brass disc. The case has a brass lock. The key and small keyhole plate are absent. The case is lined with blue felt & has compartments which contain accessories including a steel & brass cleaning rod, tool with ebony handle & what appears to be a flat spring. The inside of the lid has a John Rigby & Co trade label. The price for this excellent cased revolver with accessories includes UK delivery. NB As an antique, obsolete calibre weapon no licence is required to own this item in the UK if retained as a part of a collection or display. Sn 18258:1
